UWM Special Collections

Though Max was a little long winded, I think the trip to UWM was awesome.  He said some really interesting things about books.  I loved the idea of the body book, though I'm not sure how willing I would have been to participate as much as he did, especially after he demonstrated on me how close he was to the artist to find the text.

I also enjoyed what he said about Marshall McCluhan's "medium is the message" idea.  I had honestly never considered the form of a TV set like I've considered the form of a book.  It's a sculptural object but we don't understand it as something that affects the meaning of what is shown on it's surface.  The point of many book art objects is to break down this traditional understanding and make the book's form directly affect the way we interpret its content.

I'd love to see the Edible Books Contest! I'm going to have to keep my ears open for news about that this year.  He mentioned Woodland Pattern Bookstore in Riverwest, which is a great place to check out independently made small books and more obscure books.  They also have art exhibits and musical performances, mostly experimental in nature.   If you ever get a chance you should definitely check it out.

Another great quote Max mentioned was by the Steven's Point book artist who's name I missed when he said it (can anyone remember?).  "Books are so intimate, we take them to bed with us."  Such a lovely statement!

I'm looking forward to your books! Only two days left!
