I agree with you that the narrow walk way adds mystery, however i think that because you are taking the picture from the darker part of the walk way, and there is so much light at the end of it, you are taking the picture from a place where you seem stuck. The girl who is up next to the gate seems to almost be looking beyond the gate to where the light is, and you are both unable to get to where there is light because the gate is blocking you both off.
