Critique Recap

So you had your first critique today!  How does everybody feel about it?  I think it went pretty well for a first crit. Some great progress was made with photograms, I'm excited to see what you can turn them into over the weekend.

We discussed some elements that you should consider thoroughly when you make your weekend photogram:
-eye movement
-value shifts (three-dimensionality vs. two-dimensionality of objects)
-arrangement and size of panels/presentation
-print quality: edges, size, chemical stains, enough fix time
-abstraction vs. realism of objects

Was the concept you intended interpreted correctly by the class today?  Consider how everyone reacted to your piece compared to how you see it and if it's where you want it to be.

Melina Morales

Melina's piece had an interesting presentation that drove the narrative as much as the images themselves.  She also only used two objects the entire time, talk about simple! Sometimes you can say much more with much less.

Sarah Nasgowitz

Sarah's piece incorporated visual elements that drew conclusions about the narrative but didn't exactly confirm them.  The pearl necklace's strong aesthetic pull across the entire composition forced our eyes toward the hand at the end, suggesting a human presence in the piece.  Eye movement is a great way to direct understanding of a piece, when used well.

Good job today, guys! Have fun with your 4x5's this weekend!
